Motives are complex. But people, and especially kids, don't like complex. They want a simple story. If you give them complex, they will key on a single element and wrap their story around it--often not an element you sould choose or expect.

We usually don't even know our own motives. Mostly we pick out (or make up--in honor of the parenthetical) a single element and craft our own story that we tell ourselves. So.
